Uganda: NWSC Wins Global Award

National Water and Sewerage Corporation (NWSC) has won the prestigious 2014 Water Leaders award during the Global Water Summit held recently in Paris, France.

The state minister for Water, Betty Bigombe, received the award in Paris. Her delegation included NWSC Board Chairman Christopher Ebal, his vice Ruth Asiimwe Kanyaruju and the managing director, Dr Silver Mugisha. Global Water awards are an annual competition designed to reward excellence and innovation. The awards recognize the projects and technologies that create positive impact in the water sector.

The Water Leaders' award, where NWSC got a distinction, is the most unique of these awards, according to a press statement from the corporation. In its five-year strategic direction, NWSC managers have promised to provide 100 per cent service coverage in the country.

The corporation has extended geographical coverage to 43 towns as at April 1, up from 23 towns at the beginning of this financial year. This will rise to 50 towns by the end of the financial year. The target is to cover 80 towns by 2018.

Meanwhile, NWSC has announced it posted a strong financial performance for the month of March - record revenues of Shs 17.2bn. The performance comes on the back of increased collection efficiency, the corporation said.
