MACHAKOS Governor Alfred Mutua yesterday inspected the ongoing construction of the Sh650 million Makutano-Kithimani road. He expressed satisfaction with the progress and urged the contractors to meet their deadlines.
Mutua said the road should be completed in the next three months. He said it will open up Yatta and Mwala districts as well as boosting economic activities between the two sub counties.
Despite its economic importance, the 33-kilometer road has been in deplorable state since independence. Mutua said the ciounty government has made it a priority to tarmack theb road. This is the first road to be fully financed to bitumen standards by the county government," he said.
He said the road has been subdivided into 11 sections with different contractors. Mutua said this will ensure the construction work is completed in record time and at a lower cost.
"In the past roads have cost more than they should because of people wanting to cut deals in the contracts awarded. In Machakos we are shifting away from that and as a result we are saving more than Sh600 million that we will use on other projects," he said.
