Nigeria: What's Zoning Got to Do With It?

The announcement, last week, by a leader of the All Progressives Congress in Lagos, Bola Tinubu, that the governorship in 2015 has been zoned to Lagos East is playing to the answer.

It could not have been sheer accident that former Lagos State governor and a leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Bola Tinubu announced last week that Governor Babatunde Fashola's successor would come from Lagos East. Tinubu, for the undiscerning, is playing to the already identified answer. One thing is however uppermost in his heart - it is determining who comes after Governor Babatunde Raji Fashola as governor of the state. He would not allow the system function uninterrupted. And in doing this, two salient factors are germane: one is zoning and two, religion. In the event leading to the candidacy of Fashola in 2007, the leadership of the defunct Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) led by Tinubu was said to have had an understanding with the leaders of the Christian community at a meeting in the state.
