Last week, news channels aired footage of a large number of people, particularly youths, queuing to apply for cabin crew jobs with Qatar Airways. Some Ugandans on social media suggested that 3,000 people had applied for the eight vacancies at the airline.
For a moment, I thought of the 65,000 job-seekers who turned out at a stadium in Abuja, Nigeria, when a recruitment exercise was taking place. Sixteen people died then, and hundreds were injured.
