INCIDENTS of child abuse are on the rise in the country and thus denying them of their basic rights, a new report by the Legal and Human Rights Centre (LHRC) has revealed.

The report, dubbed "Tanzania Human Rights Report 2013," documents human rights in the country with special focus on various issues and events that contravene them. The report revealed that there have been 863 cases of child sodomy throughout the country.

Most of the cases, the suspected perpetrators are close members of the family including fathers, uncles and others.

LHRC's Director, Dr Hellen Kijo-bisimba, said that children have continued to face sexual abuse at the hands of people who are supposed to be their caretakers.

Dr Kijo-Bisimba remarked that there is need to establish special schools to provide education to parents and guardians on best ways to raise their children, because most of them have been mistreating them as if they were not their own.

"There is need to take stern measures against parents who violate children's rights and their children should be raised by other responsible people until they show that they have changed," said Dr Kijo-Bisimba.

She further said that children could not defend themselves but that is not the reason to abuse them, they need to be cared for as they are the future of the nation.

Expounding further on the matter, she said the report revealed increase in violence against women and children, something which portrays that there are no laws to protect them.

Before launching the report, the Director of Criminal Investigations (DCI), Commissioner of Police (CP), Issaya Mngulu, said that in some communities children lack protection and care from their parents and most of them are not safe.
