Tunisia: Al-Assad Submits Election Bid

Damascus — Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad declared his candidacy on Monday for a new seven-year term in June presidential elections, the Syrian Parliament announced Monday.

Parliament speaker Jihad al-Lham announced Assad's candidacy while reading out the president's letter to the parliament.

The speaker quoted Assad as saying: "I ... Dr Bashar Hafez al Assad ... wish to nominate myself for the post of president of the republic, hoping that parliament will endorse it."

The Syrian opposition and its Western allies have denounced the June 3 election as a sham designed to lend Assad, who is widely expected to win, a patina of electoral legitimacy.
