Southern Africa: SADC Gender Protocol At Work summit starts in Maputo

Mozambican minister of Women's Affairs and Social Welfare, Yolanda Cintura, says like many countries in the Southern African region, Mozambique will not be able to reach the 28 targets prescribed by the SADC Protocol on Gender and Development by 2015. However, she recognises that significant progress has been made in Mozambique in areas, including women in decision-making positions, education, women's empowerment and in enacting laws that protect both men and women.

Cintura was speaking in Maputo on Monday at the opening of a two-day national SADC Gender Protocol@Work summit organised by Gender Links under the theme: "50/50 by 2015 - Demanding a stronger post 2015 Agenda. She expected the summit to serve as a platform for an exchange of the best practices to help Mozambique scale up efforts for gender equality, equity and parity in all spheres of the country's economic, social and political life.
