El Aaiun — The Moroccan forces suppressed 'violently' on Wednesday evening a peaceful demonstration in the occupied city of El Aaiun, leaving more than 70 injured, according to the Ministry of Occupied Territories and Community Abroad.

'The Sahrawi citizens took to the streets immediatly after the UN Security Council approved resolution 2152 to demand the expansion of MINURSO's mandate to include monitoring of human rights, release of Sahrawi political prisoners, in particular the group of Gdeim Izik, and reveal the the whereabouts of those who are missing, said the source.

Eyewitnesses said the Sahrawi demonstrators and human rights activists were subjected to "provocation and insults" by Moroccan police and forces which used batons to disperse them, leaving many casualties.

The demonstration coincided with the visit of the UN High Commision of Human Rights which has been in the city since Friday.
