Nigeria: Between Akpabio and the Akwa Ibom People

In Akwa Ibom State comes an acid test for President Goodluck Jonathan's Peoples Democratic Party which could affect the party's fortunes in the state ahead of 2015. But this is dependent on how the president and National Chairman of the party, Adamu Mu'azu, handle the simmering situation.

The division in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) remains a never ending story. Just when Nigerians thought the coming of the present National Chairman of the party, Alhaji Adamu Mu'azu, would put to rest the drama witnessed in the party towards the tail-end of last year and early part of 2014, there appears to be more episodes to come. Although some may want to quickly dismiss the growing division coming from the state as inconsequential, the matter, if not decisively and timely addressed, could affect the national office. The reason is because the governor involved, Godswill Akpabio, being a close ally of President Goodluck Jonathan, is facing a determined people bent on having their way. At the same time, people define him as a man who always has his way.
