A massacre of civilians. A genocide in the making. An atrocity that defies the imagination. It is difficult to come up with phrases that are strong enough to define recent happenings in South Sudan, particularly the outrageous events in Bentiu.
The international community has reacted with horror at the mass slaughter of civilians along ethnic lines. The ceasefire agreement signed in January has all but collapsed. There have been calls for the combatants to stop committing what amounts to war crimes.
