Kenya: Nairobi to Roll Out New Police Unit On Skates to Clamp Down On Muggers

Nairobi — While walking along Kenyatta Avenue in Nairobi's central business district last week, Ann Wanjiru, 27, was approached by three young men who claimed they were lost and needed directions. As she stopped to help them, unbeknownst to her, the men took calculated positions around her: one of them picked at her handbag, the second plucked off her earrings and necklaces, while the third kept her distracted, engaging her in conversation.

"The incident lasted less than a minute," said Wanjiru, who runs a food kiosk at River Road in Nairobi. "When the men took off it dawned on me they were muggers. I tried shouting for help but it was too late as they had already disappeared in the crowds."
