Ghana: PIAC Battles for Heritage Fund

The Public Interest and Accountability Committee (PIAC) has kicked against the suggestion by the ruling government that the Ghana Heritage Fund (GHF) should be used to solve the country's current economic woes. The ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) General Secretary, Johnson Asiedu-Nketiah, last week, ignited the debate, when he suggested that the government should consider using the Heritage Fund to deal with the country's economic problems.

Some groups and individuals have supported Nketia's stance, saying it does not make sense for the country to continue borrow at high interest rates, while the Heritage Fund earns very little interest. However the PIAC, which is mandated to oversee the use of the Fund, maintains that the money must be used for the specific purpose for which the Fund was created.
