Somalia: Radio Station Denied Access to Press Briefing By Puntland President

(Garowe Online)-An independent and community station, Radio Garowe has been denied to cover press briefing at the State House by the President of Somalia's Puntland Government Abdiweli Mohamed Ali Gaas, Garowe Online reports.

The Presidency Director of Communications Abdirashid Yusuf Jibril on Friday deliberately handpicked Radio Garowe Director Ahmed Awil Jama from a group of journalists who queued for President Gaas' news conference at an entrance to the palace according to footage posted on You Tube.

"Abdirashid Yusuf attempted to prevent Radio Garowe from attending a press conference being held by President Gaas who returned to Garowe," said Radio Garowe Director. "The challenge sparked squabble and subsequently reached the President".

Presidential officials afterwards intervened in the issue and escorted jama to the spot where the news conference was taking place.

Puntland media houses previously blamed Jibril- Diasporan and key presidential aide-for monopolizing the coverage of president Gaas' activities.

Garowe Online news site serves as the sister publication of Radio Garowe which broadcasts daily on FM stations in Puntland capital of Garowe, commercial hub of Bossaso and coastal town of Eyl of northeastern Somalia.
