Nigeria: UPN Warns Jonathan Against Foreign Intervention

14 May 2014

The newly-registered political party, Unity Party of Nigeria (UPN), has warned President Goodluck Jonathan to be wary of the offers coming from some foreign countries to help in rescuing the over 200 abducted schoolgirls of Government Secondary School, Chibok in Borno State. The National Chairman of the party, Dr. Frederick Fasheun, at a news conference in Lagos yesterday, said while the party appreciated the offers by the United States to help rescue the girls and end terrorism, it wanted the federal government to tread cautiously in considering the US proposition.

According to Fasheun, Nigeria must be circumspect in accepting any offer from foreign countries. "This is because a few years back, US made a bid to have a military presence in Africa, to be called the African Command (AFRICOM). However, Nigeria led Africa's resistance to that project. Not only would AFRICOM contradict Nigeria's status as a non-aligned nation, it portends the danger of turning the region into a battleground for the superpowers"
