Gambia: Over 500 Compounds Around Airport May Face Demolition

Between 500 and 600 compounds around the airport extension belt may be affected by an imminent demolition exercise to be carried out by the Department of Physical Planning under the Ministry of Lands and Regional Government, the Daily Observer has learnt. This was confirmed to the Daily Observer, in an interview Wednesday afternoon with the principal Physical Planning officer at the Department of Physical Planning and Housing, Essa Camara.

His confirmation came after an eviction notice (seen by the Daily Observer, requiring removal or demolition of building/fence erected without a development permit or declared unsafe within the airport area before 26th May, 2014) was served to the affected compound owners. "As of now, we are doing the survey and we do don't know the actual number of compounds affected. However at the end of the survey, we will know the actual number of the compounds affected," he told the Daily Observer in an exclusive interview at the Ministry of Lands and Regional Government. "This area has always been part of the airport area for many years and so the evacuation affects part of Busumbala, Farato, Makumbaya, Bafuloto and it comes down to Lamin," Camara said.
