Egypt: State Department - Washington Encourages Free Elections in Egypt

Marie Harf, the Deputy Spokesperson for the US State Department said the United States does not support certain persons or groups in the presidential elections which will be held in Egypt during the coming two days.

In statements to journalists on Friday 23/05/2014, the US official said that the Egyptian government is called upon to secure fair, transparent and integral elections in Egypt. She noted that Egypt is in need of adopting more open policy based on democratic principles.

Harf explained that the United States is keeping in touch with different parties in Egypt and encourages holding fair and transparent elections. The spokesperson said the United States is waiting for what will take place on the ground and will make its assessment.
