Malawi: Madonna Criticises President Banda Over Election Recount

27 May 2014

U.S. pop star Madonna has criticised Malawian President Joyce Banda on her charity's website, Raising Malawi http://www.raisingmalawi.org, and accused the government of corruption after it was announced that ballots will be recounted after the election.

In the statement, Madonna said she was "so sad to see that because of the actions of their President Malawians will continue to suffer."

The diva adopted two children from Malawi, and then toured the southern African country, after which the government launched a scathing attack, accusing her of demanding special treatment and exaggerating her contributions to the country.

Madonna continued to say that she "can only hope that change will come, Malawians deserve so much better".
