Nigeria: Delegates in Near Fisticuffs Over Pilgrimage

Deliberations by the delegates at the ongoing National Conference turned rowdy yesterday over a proposal to scrap the pilgrims' welfare commissions or boards in order to allow pilgrimage affairs by both Christians and Muslims to be handled privately. The proposal was part of issues being considered after the presentation of the Standing Committee on Religion's report.

Because of the emotive nature of the report, many delegates had indicated their interests to comment on it. However, for time constraints, 40 delegates were not allowed to make their comments at the end in order to begin the consideration of the various amendments proposed to the report. The committee was co-chaired by Bishop Felix Ajakaye and Ustaz Nurudeen Lemu.
