press release

The DA mourns the passing of Maya Angelou. A warrior for equality, tolerance and peace, Ms Angelou was an inspiration to many South Africans.

In Ms Angelou the world has lost one of the greatest writers of the civil rights era. With her words and courage she bound South Africans and Americans together in a powerful unbreakable thread of struggle and resolve.

Maya Angelou was an inspiration to all of us who struggled for justice in a world where race mattered.

As a former Trustee of the New York based Ford Foundation, I delighted in the association with Ms Angelou in the late 1990s and early 2000s.

She will undoubtedly be mourned by millions of people around the world to whom she mentored, inspired and motivated.

Our deepest condolences, thoughts and prayers are with her family and friends.

Wilmot James, Chairperson of DA Federal Council
