South Africa: Black Mambazo Lacks Character

press release

The Swaziland Solidarity Network would like to retract an earlier statement where it publicly expressed gratitude to Ladysmith Black Mambazo for honouring the cultural boycott. We have been reliably informed that Black Mambazo did not honour the cultural boycott against Swaziland and actually performed at a music festival in Swaziland last week.

Our earlier statement was published after we read the Show organiser claiming that Black Mambazo had been threatened by our network into not performing. That desperate lie, coupled by the verbal agreement by the group's leader with senior SSN leaders and our esteem for the group's management led to us assuming that they had indeed kept their word. Refusing to be a part of the Cultural Boycott against Swaziland is one thing, which on its own certainly would have put us at odds with the music group, but which at the end of the day is ironically their democratic right.
