Ghana: What Happened to Agriculture in Ghana Up Into the 90s?

I can count dozens of former military officers, technocrats, and elite from academia who hailed from the three Northern regions of Ghana, and who made money from crop farming in the 70s, 80 and mid 90s. I can also cite politicians from those regions who took advantage of the Tono, Vea and Pwalugu irrigation facilities to improve substantially, their living conditions - even as absentee farmers. I keep citing the three Northern regions because they can still be strategically be relied upon to deliver, if we get our reform programme and strategies right.

Additionally, we can, without being personal, cite former managers of these facilities, who also benefitted immensely from agriculture within the period I have cited. Maize, millet, beans, rice and tomato were then some of the key economic crops they cultivated.
