South Africa: Business Confidence in Concerning Territory

press release

The SACCI Business Confidence Index (BCI) for May 2014 was released today at the SACCI Offices in Rosebank, Johannesburg.

A convergence of recent negative developments caused the SACCI Business Confidence Index to decline by 3.7 index points from April 2014 to 88.9 in May 2014. The BCI falling to a level below 90 for the first time since April 2000 is concerning. The May 2014 BCI is 1.5 index points lower than in May 2013. The May 2014 index figure of 88.9 is a setback to an already weak upward trend since the start of 2014.
