Liberia: Official Clarifies Chinese, New Museum Issue

Director of the National Museum, Albert Markey, says US$1.5 million would be needed to build a new National Museum in Liberia.

He said the building currently housing the National Museum on Broad Street is fast deteriorating, because since it was constructed in 1862, it has not undergone major renovation.

Markey said it is this fund he spoke of in an interview with the Liberia News Agency when he appealed to potential donors, including the People's Republic of China, to help build or provide assistance to build a new National Museum.

The Museum Director denied stating that the Chinese have offered to construct a new National Museum in Liberia as was reported in the media.

Recently, it was reported that Mr. Markey had alluded to a commitment by the Government of the People's Republic of China to construct a new National Museum in Liberia.

Mr. Markey reportedly said that the Chinese had requested the Liberian Government to make available a parcel of land to construct the new museum at an estimated cost of US$1.5 million.

But the embassy of China in Liberia rebutted the publication, saying it has "never" made any such commitment.
