Nigeria: Government Agencies and Financial Impunity

We call the National Assembly to live up to its responsibilities of oversight functions on the ministries and government agencies to ensure that they conform to the statutory books.

Over the years, Nigerians have witnessed open display of impunity by top government functionaries in the discharge of their duties; and sometimes, even in their personal carriage. In the case of finances, government agencies - ministries, parastatals and extra-ministerial departments - are involved in financial impunity to the extent of spending public funds without accountability. The case of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) spending N10billion for the charter of a plane for the private use of the Minister of Petroleum, Diezani Allison- Madueke, is a classic example of financial impunity on the part of government agencies.
