Tanzania: 149 Artisanal Miners Risk Losing Licences

Mara — THE government intends to revoke the mining licences of 149 artisanal miners in Mara Region after failing to pay annual fees.

The list has already been submitted to the Lake Zone Commissioner for Minerals, according to Musoma Resident Mines Officer, Mr Pius Lobe.

"Mining licences of 149 small scale miners who have failed to pay annual fees will be revoked and I have already submitted the list to Lake Zone Mines Office for action," Mr Lobe said in Tarime recently.

He said the miners are scattered in almost all districts of Mara Region. He also reminded other miners not in the list to pay their taxes and fees on time to avoid similar circumstances.

"They should also mine in the allocated areas instead of leaving their mining areas dormant," he further cautioned. He was speaking to the 'Daily News' shortly after attending a workshop organised by Tanzania Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (TEITI) in Tarime recently.

Many parts of Mara Region are reportedly blessed with a variety of mineral deposits that can be used to speed up regional development and that of the nation at large.
