Zimbabwe: Mum Burns Daughter, 5, for Nicking Meat

A STINGY Bulawayo mum beat up her six-year-old daughter with a cable and further dropped burning plastic in her mouth accusing the girl of stealing a piece of meat from the pot.

Neighbours noticed the abuse and tipped the police who responded by arresting the mother.

Sibongile Sibanda, 31, appeared before a Bulawayo magistrate Willard Maphios Moyo last Tuesday charged with physical abuse.

"The accused beat up her six-year-old daughter mercilessly all over the body using a wire cable and she burnt her with a plastic which had fire on her mouth after she had stolen meat," said Mufaro Mageza, representing the State.

Sibanda admitted committing the offence and pleaded with the court to pardon her.

"I don't know what came over me but I didn't mean to cause harm to my child. She stole and I couldn't control myself; I thought I was disciplining her.

"I have another child who still breastfeeds ... please have mercy on me, I won't repeat the same mistake," she said.

The magistrate remanded Sibanda out of custody for sentencing.
