Mozambique: Sofala Provincial Government Insists On Splitting Beira

Maputo — The permanent secretary of the Sofala provincial government in central Mozambique, Claudina Mazolo, has declared that the city of Beira will be split in two later this year, regardless of opposition from the city's mayor, Daviz Simango, reports Monday's issue of the Maputo daily “Noticias”.

Mazolo was reacting on Saturday to claims by Simango that there were no good reasons for a new administrative division of Beira. He described attempts to truncate Beira as “anti-democratic”, and warned that the municipal government would not be held responsible for anything that Beira citizens might do to resist this move,
