Gambia: Department of Social Welfare On Child Protection

Crr — The Department of Social Welfare with support from UNICEF on Monday began a two-day establishment and training on child protection for child protection health focal point and persons in health facilities in Janjangbureh, Central River Region (CRR). Participants were drawn from the health facilities in Upper River Region and Central River Region. According to officials, they will work together with the police at their health facilities to identify child abuse cases and conduct medical examination on the victims.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, the Child Protection officer of UNICEF, Awa Joof spoke extensively on the importance of setting up and training of health focal persons responsible for the protection of children from abuse and exploitation. She pointed out that child abuse, in particular child sexual abuse and exploitation is a serious violation of the rights of children. And as a result, she noted, they brought together health workers drawn from selected health facilities to work in unison towards protecting and promoting the rights of children, whose roles and commitment are vital.
