Tanzania: DPP Appoints TRA Legal Counsels to Check Tax Offenders

THE Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) has appointed 28 senior legal counsels from the Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA) to prosecute tax offenders.

The appointment was made under Government Notice No. 117 published on May 16, this year. Their appointment will enable the 17-year-old revenue agency to prosecute tax offenders in courts of law.

Before the appointment of prosecutors from the TRA, tax offences were prosecuted by State Attorneys.Appointment of TRA's legal counsels - the first time since the agency was launched in June , 1996 comes at the time when the government has put its best foot forward - determined - to fight, tooth and nail, against the stubborn tax evaders singularly and organised.

"After several years of grilling locally and abroad in the state of the art of prosecution, legal counsels in TRA's Legal Service Department are now ripe to undertake this herculean task," said one of the top-brass members of the department.

He said in 2007 when the National Prosecution Act CAP 430 was passed, powers of prosecution were vested in the office of the DPP. "With the appointment of TRA's legal counsels as prosecutors, it will be easier to send tax evaders to court without much delay," he said.

"This notice may be sited as the National Prosecutions Services (Appointment of Public Prosecutors) Notice, 2014 and shall come into operation on 20th May, 2014.

"The persons whose names appear in the schedule to this notice are hereby appointed to be public prosecutors for the purpose of prosecuting criminal cases under the Tanzania Revenue Authority Act.

"This notice shall remain valid for a period of two years from the date of coming into operation." The appointed officers are Ludovic Kandege, Juma Beleko, Felix Haule and Kyabukoba Mutabingwa.

Others are Asha Nassoro, Primi Telesphori, Joyce Sojo, Geva Masele, Salvatory Switi, Ndarai Kidaya, Jane Kimweri, Elisha Shigela , Mwamtum Salim, Consolata Andrew, Adelard Alfred, Juma K. kasongo, Sweetbert Soka.
