Mohammed, the son of the late head of state, Gen. Sani Abacha, who was discharged and acquitted by the federal government in the case of stolen funds, may eventually become the joker for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) come 2015 governorship poll against the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), LEADERSHIP has reliably gathered.
The federal government, through the attorney-general of the federation and minister of justice, Mr Mohammed Adoke (SAN), had on Wednesday withdrawn the theft case, asking the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory to strike out the charges of N446.3billion theft against Mohammed Abacha.
Kano used to be a PDP controlled state until of recent when Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso and four other governors under the aegis of the party defected to APC in the wake of the internal squabbles that rocked the party.
Political pundits believe that the odds favour APC on who becomes the next governor especially with the emergence of former controversial CBN governor, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi as the new emir of Kano.
An informed source close to the ruling PDP disclosed that Mohammed and his ally and former chief security officer to the late Gen. Abacha, Al-Mustapha, will play prominent roles in the coming election in favour of the party.
It was this permutation that brought Mohammed into the picture since he was schemed out of the race under the platform of the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) despite his financial status and grassroots support.
"Although, what the Minister of Justice, Adoke did was constitutional but there was element of politics involved. You may recall, of recent, Governor Rabiu Kwankaso made Sanusi Lamido Sanusi the Emir of Kano for political reasons and the Emir would, no doubt, support for his presidential bid and his attempt to retain Kano for APC. But former governor of Kano and now a PDP chieftain, Mallam Ibrahim Shekarau and Amb Aminu Wali would not welcome that hence the need for Mohammed Abacha on their side to fight Kwankaso/Sanusi, Naira for Naira and Dollar for Dollar.
"He was robbed of his ambition by the leadership of CPC and he has of recent defected to PDP. And you should also remember that Major Al-Mustapha his friend would also identify with PDP and if Mohammed is the PDP candidate, the two would work together to guarantee his victory. That is politics behind whatever economic reasons you may be given", the source disclosed.
Speaking further, the source disclosed that the recently conducted Local government poll conducted in the state was allegedly manipulated by the ruling party in the state and the coming election would show which party is in control of Kano State.
"Recently, the State government conducted the local government election which was everything but free and fair, both parties would use the February general elections to showcase which of the two is in charge of Kano State especially with the plan of Kwankaso to contest the presidential poll if given the nod of his party."
