Nigeria: Fleeing Taraba Villagers Drown As Boat Capsizes

Abuja — AT least 40 people have drowned after a boat they were fleeing gunmen in capsized in Dampa Ibi Local Government Council of Taraba State.

Confirming the report, the Chairman of the Local Government, Adamu Ishaka, said the assailants shot at the boat resulting in the vessel losing control.

“We have drafted marine police to the area to go and confirm what actually happened but with the information, I got the suspected gunmen from Plateau shot at the boat as the villagers were trying to escape,” said Ishaka.

According to him, the marine police were yet to return from the scene.

He pledged to give more details as soon as the marine police returned.

Police Public Relation Officer, Joseph Kwaji said the command had drafted heavily armed policemen to the area stressing that relevant efforts would be put in place to track down the culprits.

Accordingly to witnesses the majority of the deceased were women, children as well as the elderly who could not swim.
