Kenya: Six Poachers Shot Dead At Timau, Meru County

Six suspected poachers have been killed at the Timau police road block during a shoot out with police Tuesday morning.

Sources from the conservationists in the area say the poachers were en route to kill rhinos at Solio ranch.

Buuri OCPD Nicholas Musilu said the six suspected poachers were killed after a tip off by the members of the public. "When the occupants of the vehicle approached the road block they were ordered to stop but six of them alighted and opened fire and Police responded promptly killing the six on the spot," he said.

The suspects were driving in a saloon car from Isiolo towards Nanyuki town.

Musilu said police recovered two AK 47 rifles, 54 rounds of ammunition, a panga, a slasher and two empty magazines.

Musilu added that the police were not able to recognise the registration number of the vehicle which escaped at high speed after the shootout started towards Isiolo.

"We believe the driver was injured and it escaped with other weapons. Since we have leads of where the vehicle came from, we will soon get in touch with Isiolo police," he said.
