Uganda: Kadaga Pledges Support to NBL

Speaker of Parliament Rebecca Kadaga has pledged Parliament's support to industries that process agricultural products.

Kagada made the pledge while meeting the new Managing Director of Nile Breweries Limited (NBL), Greg Metcalf, on Monday.

"Parliament will work to maintain the status quo of government supporting industries that promote agriculture and provide market to farmers," she said.

NBL, Uganda's largest brewer, buys agricultural raw materials from over 20,000 Ugandan farmers, who produce barley, sorghum and maize for it to make beer. The company spends Shs 40bn annually to buy grain from farmers, according to an NBL media statement. Greg Metcalf said NBL had invested $200m in the country in the last five years alone.

"We appreciate the co-operation of Parliament in what has been a win-win programme," he said.

Nile Breweries employs over 1,000 Ugandans directly, and its value chain employs another 200,000.
