Nigeria: Niger Govt Cautions Parents Against Child Abuse

Minna — Niger State government has challenged parents on the need to take care of their children to become responsible future leaders and to desist forthwith from encouraging them to engage in street begging (almajiri), which according to the government, is child abuse. Meanwhile, Minna Orphanage Home between 2007 and 2014 received about 116 abandoned babies and about 90 per cent of the children, including 68 female and 47 males were given out for fostering by interested couples in parts of the state within the period under review.

Niger State Commissioner for Gender Affairs and Social Development, Hajia Hassana Adamu, who disclosed this in an interview in Minna was however pointed out that the state government does not encourage adoption of children.
