Hundreds of youth from around the country echoed remarks of national solidarity while participating in day one of the National Youth Retreat organized by Imbuto Foundation and Ministry of Youth and ICT in Musanze. Held under the theme 'Twahisemo' or '20 years-We chose', and inspired by the speech of President Paul Kagame during his address at the 20th Commemoration of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi, the theme reflects the three choices Rwandans made after the Liberation struggle: staying together, being accountable, and thinking big.
"We staying together shouldn't be an option but rather a must," said Irene Irakoze, a participant from Huye, as he echoed the message of his peers at the retreat.
"If Rwanda is to achieve the targets it has set, then unity is paramount for us to achieve them," said Frank Abaho from Muhanga, as he referred to the country's Vision 2020 goals and EDPRSII projects.
Speaking during the opening ceremony of this three day retreat, the mayor of Musanze, Eugene Muzuka, asked the youth to be responsible for one another as it will enable Rwanda defeat its enemies and propel forward.
"Only by being responsible for one another, can our country move forward," said the Mayor.
The head of the college of arts and sciences at the University of Rwanda Huye campus, Usta Kayitesi, emphasized the essence of "Ndi Umunyarwanda," and its importance to the future and youth of this country. "What is necessary for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing," Kayitesi said, as he asked the youth not to be bystanders, but to engage in doing good for the country.
The session ended with a conversation on the importance of the choices youth make in deciding their roles in the future of their country.
The youth engaged in two sessions regarding team building and the Essence of Ndi Umunyarwanda.
The retreat continues with day two that tackles two of the other choices made by Rwandans after Liberation 20 years ago, notably the need to think big and being accountable. Day three they will engage in the Global Umuganda.
