Nigeria: Shortage of Oncologists Threatens Cancer Care in W-Africa

THE acute shortage of qualified oncologists in Nigeria and other West African countries, as well as the growing incidence of westernised lifestyle are factors fuelling the rush abroad for cancer treatment at a huge cost.

The Chief Executive Officer, Sweden Ghana Medical Centre Limited, SGMC, a cancer care centre, Joshua Tetteh, who made this observation weekend, lamented the dearth of oncologists as major factor in the low survival rate of cancer patients recorded in the West African sub-region.
