Gambia's Gains Against Trafficking in Persons

editorial

The Gambia government under the leadership of the president of the Republic, His Excellency Sheikh Prof. Alh. Dr. Yahya Jammeh, continues to demonstrate its strong commitment in the fight against trafficking in persons and other related child and human rights violations. It should not be forgotten that it was as far back as 2007 that the president appended his signature to the Trafficking in Persons Act.

The existence of the anti-trafficking in persons law demonstrates The Gambia Government's commitment to international conventions, notably the United Nations Convention against Transnational Organised Crime, and the Protocol to Prevent, Suppress and Punish Trafficking in Persons, supplementing the United Nations Convention against Transnational Organised Crime on human trafficking. The Act is also in line with the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women and the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child. The Gambia is among 137 of 147 countries that have signed and ratified the UN Convention against Transnational Organised Crime, and the Protocol.
