Against the backdrop of its critical role in the body polity, Davidson Iriekpen explains why the forthcoming election of the Nigerian Bar Association matters to the nation's political class

The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) is about to elect its new set of officers to guide the affairs of the lawyers' body for another two years as the curtains are drawn on the tenure of the Okey Wali-led national executive. And because of its pivotal role in Nigeria's body polity, the NBA has never failed to generate impassioned interest from Nigerians. Variously known as the 'voice of the voiceless' or the 'conscience of the nation,' the body has stood up to be counted in matters relating to justice sector reforms and enthronement of the rule of law.
