Nigeria: Uduaghan Approves Funds to Clear LG Salary Arrears

7 July 2014

Relief appears underway for employees of local government councils in Delta State, who have been groaning under the pain of unpaid salaries as the state Governor, Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan, has reportedly approved and directed the release of funds to offset the accumulated staff salaries by more than half of the 25 local government councils in the state. The intervention by the governor through the approval of the release of the funds would enable about 14 local government councils to commence the immediate payment of backlog of salaries owed their workers.

The President of the Delta State chapter of the National Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) in the State, Comrade David Ofoeyeno confirmed this to newsmen as he commended Uduaghan for the gesture. The state NULGE president said the entire leadership of the union and the affected workers were excited by the "unprecedented and generous action" of the governor. He said the governor has again demonstrated his interest and concern about the wellbeing of the staff of the local government councils and workers in the state in general. He noted that the timely gesture would lift the burden of unpaid salaries off the shoulders of the local government councils. According to him, it was hardly surprising that Uduaghan is patron of not only the national NULGE but also a patron of all local and municipal governments in Africa. He noted that, "With the approval of this fund, no local staff will be owed salary in the state, and we the government absolutely appreciate the governor for his timely intervention in saving the state local government workers from the precarious situation they found themselves. "Uduaghan did it for teachers when they were in similar predicament by approving funds for regular payment of their salaries. Now, he has extended the same gesture to local government staff."
