Nigeria: Waiting for Senate's Debate On Makarfi Report

Abuja — The Nigerian Senate may erupt in a rumpus as it begins debate on the 73-page report of its Committee on Finance, chaired by Senator Ahmed Makarfi, which investigated the allegation of unremitted $49.8billion crude oil revenue. Already, palpable tension, recrimination,

and political intrigues have so far characterized the report since it was presented to the Senate at plenary, shortly before the upper legislative chamber embarked on its recent two week recess. The report, since it was made public through the media, has continued to generate controversy and sharp divisions among the general public, particularly the Senators themselves. Even as the Senate resumes from recess to look into the report, including several others, as revealed during a recent media briefing by the Senate Committee Chairman on Rules and Business, Senator Ita Enang, the lawmakers are certainly going to engage one another in vitriolic polemics over this report which may create intense division, along party lines, among them.
