Maputo — Mozambique's former rebel movement Renamo believes that the motive for the Monday arrest of its spokesperson, Antonio Muchanga, was the statements he has made repeatedly to the media in recent months, regarded by the prosecution authorities as incitement to violence.
Muchanga is a member of the Council of State, an advisory body to the President of the Republic. He was detained within the presidential complex as he was leaving a meeting of the Council called by President Armando Guebuza to discuss the current politico-military tensions in the country.
