Ritual, a programme of music composed by 12 South African composers performed by Magdalene Minnaar (soprano) and Magda de Vries (marimba and percussion), owes as much to the art music custom of notating musical creativity in staff notation, as it does to the rituals engaged in preparing art music for public performance, and the behavioural rites involved with western-styled concerts.
Performed by two of South Africa's most accomplished younger performers it is strange that this fascinating programme didn't quite ignite. Application of partial aleatoricism – audience members determining the programme's order – may have intruded on prudently designed programming.
