Tunisia: Ben Jaafar, Abassi Discuss Preparations for Upcoming Elections

Bardo — The general situation in the country and measures needed to encourage Tunisians to register to vote were discussed at a meeting held Thursday between President of the National Constituent Assembly (NCA) Mustapha Ben Jaafar and Secretary General of the Tunisian General Labour Union (UGTT) Houcine Abassi.

The meeting also focused on preparations ahead of the upcoming elections and ways to ensure the success of the voter registration drive to be able to hold the elections in the prescribed terms.

Commenting on some calls for the postponement of these elections, Abassi said in a statement to the press that the UGTT is not concerned with this issue but his organisation seeks to protect the country's interest through national dialogue, saying that all proposals can be discussed in the national dialogue.

He added that he also reviewed with Ben Jaafar other social issues related to some draft laws to be discussed by the NCA, including Article 2 of the law on public service.
