Kenya: SRC Won't Pay 'Frivolous' Costs

MCAs and other county government officials who misused county funds in on irregular allowances and foreign trips risk prosecution.

In a press briefing yesterday, members of the Salaries and Remuneration Commission said there has been frivolous spending by MCAs on international trips, travel allowances and staffing.

"SRC has noted gross disservice to the Kenyan public through misuse of public funds by MCAs. This spending is an issue not restricted to MCAs, but reaches across the entire public sector," Serem said.

She said SRC will start a nationwide audit of county expenditures, whose report will be released next month.

"Economic sustainability will be at stake if leaders do not exercise prudent financial management, which goes against SRC's goal to ensure a stable public wage bill," Serem said.

She said SRC will not approve payment of salaries to staff hired by MCAs.

"If need be we will abolish allowances that lead to misuse of public funds. Where there is gross abuse of public office we will recommend prosecution for abuse of office," Serem said.
