Cairo — U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry will not be visiting Cairo on Tuesday, Egypt's Foreign Ministry spokesman Badr Abdel Attey said.

A source at the American Embassy has confirmed that the high ranking US official will not be visiting Egypt which proposed a ceasefire between Israel and Gaza late on Monday.

Israel accepted the Egypt-proposed truce, but Hamas said it was not told of the initiative.

Sources had said that Kerry would be visiting Cairo on Tuesday to meet with Egyptian officials to discuss the ceasefire proposal after almost 200 people in Gaza have been killed by Israeli airstrikes.
