Tanzania: Lila Appointed New Principal Judge

PRESIDENT Jakaya Kikwete has appointed Judge Shabani Ally Lila Principal Judge of the High Court effective on Monday.

Chief Secretary Ambassador Ombeni Sefue said in a statement in Dar es Salaam that the appointment of the 53-year-old judge follows the retirement of Judge Fakih Jundu in accordance with the law effective on Sunday.

The appointed principal judge has 22 years of experience in Tanzania's courts, where he has worked in different capacities. Before his appointment, Judge Lila worked as High Court Judge and Registrar, working on the establishment of the High Court, Ilala Zone.

According to the statement,the new principal judge holds a Bachelor of Laws Degree with honours (LLB Hons) from the University of Dar es Salaam.

From 1991 to date, he has attended a number of short courses, seminars, meetings and forums. He is a member of the judiciary ethics committee and Chairman of the National Committee on Community Services (Prisoners).

President Kikwete has expressed appreciation for the good work done by Judge Jundu for his services in general and for the five years he has been principal judge.
