Tunisia: Head of State Prosecutes Whoever Makes Statement Offends State Institutions Over Supporting Terrorism, and a Journalist Precluded From Carrying Out His Work

press release

Cairo: — The Arabic Network for Human Rights Information (ANHRI) denounces the announcement released by Presidency of the Republic of Tunisia on July 18 about its intention to sue whoever makes any statements that prejudice national security or offend state institutions. In another context, ANHRI condemns the attack on Al-Shorouk newspaper reporter "Nabil Wezdo" on July 11 during his coverage of "Qelala" incidents.

On the 18th of July, the Presidency of the Republic of Tunisia stated its intention to prosecute whoever makes statements in media that deem offensive to the national security, and incites against state institutions. The decision came without giving an explanation of what may be considered a threat or incitement against state institutions. It is noteworthy that the decree was issued in light of the Tunisian Republic's objection to the accusations of supporting terrorism brought by some activists against some state officials. In the context of violations, security men's supporters tried, on July 11, to preclude Al-Shorouk newspaper reporter "Nabil Wezdo" from covering "Qelala" residents' protests; arguing that he has no right to shoot. Wezdo was beaten and taken to the police car. In addition to that, his camera and cell phone were broken, despite the fact that he had shown them his identity card.
