Liberia: NEC Clears Weah, Robert Sirleaf, Others

The National Elections Commission or NEC has clears Congress for Democratic Change Standard Bearer, George Weah, Independent Candidate, Mr. Robert Alvin Sirleaf, son of President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf and 139 individuals to contest in the impending 2014 Special Senatorial Election. George Weah and Robert Sirleaf are expected to be tough contenders for the Montserrado County race.

There are media reports that both George Weah and Robert Sirleaf are holders of American passports, something which contravenes the Liberian Constitution, but these allegations are yet to be brought before the NEC or a constitutional court to challenge both men candidacies. The Liberian Constitution prohibits dual citizenship; something if proven by anyone could stall the participation of Weah and Sirleaf.
