Somalia: A Mother Delivers Conjoined Twins in Mogadishu

Last Friday, a mother delivered conjoined baby girl twins in Mogadishu. They are attached to each other on the stomachs and on the hips. They only have three legs.

The father of these twins is called Ismail Hassan Sheikh Ali and their mother is called Raaho Jayte Hiraabe. Doctors are now trying to take care of the health condition of those baby girls in one of the hospitals in Mogadishu. The father of the twins, Mr. Ismail and his brother visited Dalsan Radio Stations and explained to us the health condition of those babies. They pointed out that the health condition of the babies is good at the moment. The uncle of the babies, Mr.Omar Hassan Sheikh Ali asserted that the doctors said the babies needed specialised surgical operation which cannot be done in the country and hence which necessitates them to be sent abroad for that medical purpose. According to scientists, conjoined twinsare a rare phenomenon. Its occurrence is estimated to range from 1 in 50,000 births to 1 in 200,000 births, with a somewhat higher incidence in Southwest Asia and Africa.
