Zimbabwe: 'Golden Leaf' Exports Up

Zimbabwe has so far exported 46,2 million kg of Virginia tobacco worth $212,7 million since the beginning of the year with the bulk of the tobacco destined for Belgium. Most of the tobacco that has been exported is from last year. Latest figures from the tobacco industry and Marketing Board show that Belgium, which recently overtook China and South Africa as the top importer of the country's golden leaf, has so far imported about 14,07 million kg of tobacco worth $70,2 million at an average price of $4,99 per kg.

Apart from Belgium the top five importers of the golden leaf included United Arab Emirates which imported 5,6 million kg worth $161,1 million at $2,86 per kg followed by South Africa that bought 5,3 million kg for $23,6 million at $4,45 a kg, China which spent $23,2 million on 3,6 million kg at $6,32 a kg and Russia that bought 2,5 million kg for $8,8 million kg at $6,40 per kg.
